3rd Annual Appleton Cemetery Veteran Salute Tour

  • Riverside Cemetery 714 North Owaissa Street Appleton, WI, 54911 United States (map)

The Scarlet Guard American Legion Color Guard is in the midst of planning the 3rd Annual Appleton Cemetery Veteran Salute Tour.  It is scheduled for Sunday, May 29th, 2022, beginning at 12:00 Noon.  The mission of the tour is to provide an annual salute and remembrance of the veterans that are laid to rest at each of the five cemeteries in the City of Appleton.  To be successful this effort needs to be executed as a unified collaboration with participation from all United States military services, veteran service organizations and their affiliates (i.e., auxiliaries), and other invited patriotic organizations.  This is strictly a non-partisan event.  No campaigning or political promotion will be tolerated.

Scope of the Mission:

Date =

  • Sunday, May 29, 2022

  • Joint Honor Guard Participants = Report by 11:30 AM to Riverside Cemetery’s north entrance (714 N. Owaissa St., in Appleton).

  • 12:45 PM @ Moses Montefiore Cemetery (E. Woodland Ave.)

  • 1:15 PM @ Highland Memorial Park (3131 N. Richmond St.)

  • 2:00 PM @ St. Mary Cemetery (2121 W. Prospect Ave.)

The salute performed at each cemetery will include the placing of a memorial wreath, the recital of a short prayer or tribute, a rifle volley, and the playing of Taps.

A joint honor guard will serve as the color unit for this mission.  Each military service and veteran service organization is requested to have at least one member represent them in the joint honor guard with or without their service’s flag, or unit/organization’s flags.  There is no maximum number of participants in the joint honor guard.  The Scarlet Guard American Legion Color Guard will carry the American flag and the POW/MIA flag in addition to their own unit flags.  No other American flags or POW/MIA flags are needed.  The joint honor guard participants are responsible for providing their own flag harnesses.  Attire in the joint honor guard should be the veteran service organization’s uniform, military service uniform, or business casual attire with an organization or military service cap/hat.  NO SHORTS or JEANS!  The Scarlet Guard’s field commander will command the unit.

The rifle squad will consist of members from the Appleton American Legion Post 38 and Appleton VFW Post 2778 military funeral honor guards.  American Legion Post 38’s Honor Guard commander will command that unit.

After the playing of Taps at each cemetery the joint honor guard will march off or simply disband.  All participants and spectators will then reload their vehicles and process as a motorcade to the next cemetery.  It is encouraged to patriotically decorate the vehicles participating in the motorcade.  Vehicles in the motorcade must obey all traffic laws.  The motorcade is not an organized parade, convoy, or procession.  The police department will not be blocking intersections.  We will do our best to stay together.  If the group gets broken up use the route listed below.

Motorcade Procession Route =

  • Depart Riverside Cemetery north on Owaissa Street to Wisconsin Ave., west on Wisconsin Ave. to Viola St., north on Viola St. to East Woodland Ave. STOP @ Moses Montefiore Cemetery.

  • After the salute at Moses Montefiore Cemetery we will proceed west on E. Woodland Ave. to Meade St., north on Meade St. to Northland Ave., west on Northand Ave. to Richmond St., north on Richmond St. to Highland Memorial Park. STOP @ Highland Memorial Park.

Coming together on a unified front for this mission will send a strong positive message to our community and help remind young and old the importance of honoring and remembering our veterans.
